How to Start an Online Business

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

You may be surprised to learn that most existing business models can be transposed into operating online pretty well these days. Once upon a time you might have had to have some sort of office space or store front to make money. This is not the case today, though, as you will now be able to do so with little more than spare time and a website. This isn’t saying that getting your online business up and running is going to be easy. It’s just the opposite.

You are going to have to devote a ton of time and effort to it. Now if you think you are one of the people who is able to give a lot of your time and effort to a project, then you can find many benefits to online businesses. Here are some ideas that you can keep in mind when you are forming up your online business.

Anyone can get started online and make a success of it.  I have a client named Dr. Kim who is going to sell his facial products online as his business grows.
All good businesses are built upon the foundation of a great business plan. No longer for offline businesses any longer, business plans work for all companies nowadays. You are better able to see and accomplish your goals if you have a written business plan. It also allows you to constructively think about what you need to do to reach your goals. Believe it or not, putting together a business plan does not have to be difficult. Any individual is capable of it. Resources are available, both on and offline, that can show you what makes a good business plan, and will help you formulate yours. Consider that your business plan is truly a guidebook for your success.

Don’t get caught up in thinking you need a website immediately. You’ve probably heard that the key to online business success is a good website. While you are definitely going to need a website for your online business, you don’t need to build one right off the bat. The website should come after everything else: after you have your idea, have figured out your business plan, gotten your funding in place, etc. Creating your website shouldn’t come until all of these other items are in place. You are most likely very excited about getting started this minute.

An online business can be created for any local business including laser skin resurfacing.
Don’t think you know everything there is to know. The Internet changes on a daily basis, and you can always learn more. Every day there are new advances in online business. People come up with new and better ways of doing things constantly and they are always improving all elements of the business. Make sure that you stay abreast of the most recent ideas to stay ahead of the curve. If you don’t do this, you could find your business falling behind or becoming outdated. That is the worst thing that could happen to you. Always stay on the look out. Always take any opportunity to advance your business.

There are many different considerations you will have to make when undertaking a new online business for yourself. Choosing where you’ll start is usually harder than dreaming of where you’d like to be.

Thankfully, you will find that as you find out more information about the operation of your new business, you will have an easier time starting the business. Just don’t ever quit – before long, you will reach the success you’ve been looking for, and you can earn your money over the Internet!

Blogging: -hosted Wordpress Also Requires You to Purchase a Domain Name for Your Blog!

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Are you already blogging or getting ready to start a blog? You may be interested in knowing that all blogging platforms are not created equal. If you intend to build an online business that will represent you well on the internet, here are some things that you will need to keep in mind.

The first thing is that a free blog will not serve you well in the long run. If you start a blog with a free service you do not own it. If you are just writing a personal diary or family blog, it may not make as much difference to you.
if you are running an online business, it means everything. A free service may remove your blog at any time if they do not like what you are doing. You do not want to take the chance of working hard for months or years, only to have it all disappear with no recourse available.

This means that you do not want to use blogger, also known as blogspot, or the free version of wordpress. These blogs are considered to be throw away sites, and you do not want to spend time on something that can be deleted by someone else.

When are ready to get serious about blogging, go to Typepad or to hosted WordPress. I often recommend Typepad for people who are just getting started online because it is very simple to set up and get going. All you need to do to get started is to purchase a domain name and sign up with Typepad. The small monthly fee you pay is your hosting fee. Typepad also has very good customer service and an online knowledge base to answer all of your questions.

Hosted WordPress also requires you to purchase a domain name for your blog. Then you will need to get an account to host your site. I recommend a hosting service with c-panel hosting, so that you will be able to take full advantage of everything the internet has to offer. there are too many details to go into here, but believe me when I say that c-panel hosting is the way to go.

Then you will need to choose a theme for your WordPress blog. There are thousands of free themes available, as well as many that you can purchase. You can search for these online very easily. I prefer a theme that is two columns, with my sidebar on the right, and also one that is widget ready. This means that you can easily add the plug-ins that WordPress is known for, like the ones for video, search engine optimization, and audio capability.

No matter if you decide to go with a hosted WordPress blog, or the simplicity of a Typepad blog, either way you will own your blog and be able to create a site that will enable you to build your online business.

How to Convert A Local Wordpress XAMPP Installation Into A Live Site?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Hi,
I recently installed wordpress on my home computer and would like to transfer it to a live site (as I now have a host site running).

I found some instructions here:
http://www.jestro.com/web-design/convert-local-wordpress-xampp-installation-into-live-site/
but I find these hard to follow.

Can anyone help? I’m a beginner at this.

Well, you have to upload all your sourses on the site, then create a database for wordpress on the site (let’s say you call it "wp_db". Export the tables from local database and import them into the site database you have made (wp_db).

When you are finished, you just need to modify the wordpress conf file with the new properties for your site database (name, server, password)…

Hope it works!

Good luck…

How do you start building a WordPress site for an already existing website?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I have a website that has been up and running for some time now, and for numerous reasons I want to replace it with a Wordpress site.

So, how do I start building the Wordpress site – in a seperate folder from the "public_html" folder? Then when you are ready to move it into the public_html folder, do you have to correct whatever file-paths and link errors?

Hello I am a professional Wordpress website designer and developer – AITpro.com so you can verify that I know what I’m talking about. ;) The website development method you are planning to do is a standard website development method that I use and probably most professional developers use so you are right on the money there. ;) I’m assuming you already know the basics, but I’ll add this info for someone else who may not know that info.
Best basic website development practices and planning
1). Create the folder first that you want to install Wordpress to either with FTP or with your CP File Manager
2). Very Important! Add an entry in your Robots.txt file to block indexing of the new folder you just created – you don’t want your new folder indexed until you are ready to launch your new website. And in your case you don’t want the folder indexed at all since you will be migrating your wordpress site to the root of your domain. If you don’t have a robots.txt file then create one. Trust me if you don’t do this it will cost you a lot of headaches. ;)
3). Do the Wordpress installation at this point – Pretty much all hosts offer the Wordpress Application for free with anywhere from 10 to 25 free SQL DB’s.
4). After you have completed all your Wordpress design work, customization, plugin installations and configurations then you are just about ready to do the Wordpress migration – SEE the Source link I have provided below for complete WP migration instructions – WP migration is very easy and simple, but be careful to follow the instructions EXACTLY.
5). DEACTIVATE ALL OF YOUR PLUGINS BEFORE DOING THE ACTUAL MIGRATION!!!
6). Since you have installed WP in another directory / folder you have a backup of all your work. ;)
7). Make a backup of your existing website files in the root of your domain.
8). Copy (NOT MOVE) all your Wordpress files and folders to the your domain root
9). Reactivate all your plugins and start testing them and reconfiguring them if necessary. (you can reactivate all of them at once or do them one by one – doesn’t matter).

To answer your question about post migration corrections to file paths. Yes, you will have to modify several paths. Since I’m very familiar with this whole process and especially the WP plugin configurations, I don’t install certain plugins until after the Wordpress migration is done. And I don’t do certain Wordpress configurations until I’ve after I’ve done the migration. If you are not very familiar with WP plugin configurations then i recommend you install and configure everything in your "development" folder and then make the file path changes after you have done the migration. Anytime you are doing a migration you should do it during "off business hours" meaning in the middle of the night. ;) If you have a totally new website it doesn’t really matter when you do the migration, but if you have an existing website that is getting visitors and making money you obviously don’t want to interrupt the flow of $$$. ;)

So to give you some specifics on the Wordpress files that will need to be modified / corrected after the migration:
If you configure Wordpress with Pretty Permalinks you will need to update this first thing right after the migration is done. Personally I recommend that you don’t configure Pretty Permalinks until your Wordpress site is migrated. Pretty Permalinks generates your .htaccess file so by updating PP from the WP Dashboard Admin panel at any point you are updating your .htaccess file.

Common WP plugins that will need path corrections:
WP-DBManager – change DB Options > path to backup. Will need to logout and maybe clear cache too to see the new changes.
Theme My Login – Theme my login Redirection URL and Theme my login Links need to be corrected
Cforms – check abspath.php and /cforms/js/cforms.js for correct file paths

Common WP files that will need to be corrected
Theme templates and specifically your header.php file.
The rest of the information you will need is contained in the Wordpress migration instructions below and all over the Internet. Wordpress answers are everywhere. ;)

How to disable full story in Wordpress?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I have a blog currently running the latest wordpress and whenever I post, I always get the full story on the homepage. I only want it to be a summary and I want the user to see the "read more" option. Is there a plugin for this? Or do I have to edit the template? I already have the Reading Settings set to "Summary", but it still doesn’t work.

Edit the template. (Actually, you may have to edit several of them.)

Look for a line that says:

<?php the_content() ?>

Change it to read:

<?php the_excerpt() ?>

This will give you approximately 120 words before Read More kicks in.

(Settings/Reading/Summary controls your feed, not to your index page.)

Is there anyway to allow others to place videos on my Wordpress blog, similar to You Tube?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I want to make my Wordpress blog have the function that allows others to put videos on the page whenever they want, even if they do not have my log in information. Is there anyway to do this? It would be similar to the way that people put videos on Youtube and make their own account.

I’m afraid that there’s no direct way you can do this on a Wordpress blog. The best alternative is to have a YouTube niche script like this: http://www.advancescripts.com/detailed/15245.html running on a separate directory and
