I have tried connecting word press.com in filezilla but it won’t connect. I think it’s because they have this new CSS upgrader and you need to pay for it. Is there any other way I could change my theme without having to pay for it?

You don’t connect to WordPress with FTP. You connect to your server that has it provided your hosting account allows use of FTP. Most free accounts do not allow FTP use.

I recently set up a tumblr account, but now I’m having trouble getting my generated theme to work. The codes are in a series of files which I downloaded, but I don’t know how to get them onto the site.
I tried going to >customize and pasting code there, but no such luck. I have an ftp client (filezilla) but I’m not sure what to do with that.
Any help would be appreciated!
A quick glance at http://www.tumblr.com/docs/custom_themes shows me that they use completely different coding than a wordpress theme. You’ll have to use whatever they offer. I couldn’t find anything on the site but there is most likely an editor in your account for you to use.
I have a free template downloaded, ready to install to my site, which is hosted by a third party server. I have FileZilla on my laptop. Do I need to transfer the template files from my FileZilla or go through the third party’s FTP site to upload the templates ?
The best way to upload and or modify web files (templates in your case) is to use a web page editor. I prefer dreamweaver as do many other people.
Dreamweaver and other html editors has a built in ftp manager that lets you upload, download files as you work on them. If you want to start with the basics, try FrontPage.
You may also use third party FTP clients as well such as:
WS_FTP
Cute_FTP
or web based FTP clients such as what our company has on the website demo
( http://www.fiberftp.com/ftp_client/fiberftp/index.html )
that will allow you to transfer the files to and from your web server.
