Wordpress Plug-ins You Must Have

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

This article will show you what wordpress plug-ins are a must have to have installed on your blog and why.

If you are not familiar with WordPress, it is an open source project that lets users use the program for free. You can learn more about and get your own WordPress blog by visiting WordPress.org today.
In case you don’t know, Plug-ins are tools that extend the functionality of WordPress and offer custom functions and features so that each user can tailor their site to their specific needs. A list of Plug-ins can be found under the Extend heading at the WordPress.org website.

Installing the plug-ins in not to difficult. After the plug-in is downloaded, it the has to be uploaded to your blogs plug-in folder via a FTP site. If you are unfamiliar with this then check with your hosting company, as they usually have some kind of guide to help you.

Now lets discuss the plug-ins that you must have.

All in one SEO Pack – This plug-in will give you the edge at making your site Search Engine Optimized. It allows you to add custom title, description and keywords into the header of your posts and pages.

Akismet Spam Filtering – Akismet is a must if you are going to allow comments on your blog. It does a fine job at separating true comments and spam comments. If you seen a blog with a bunch of spam comments, then you know what kind of trash this plug-in will keep off of your blog.

Sidebar Widget – The sidebar widget allows you to move other widgets in and out of your sidebar like a category list or blogroll. Very handy indeed.

AdSense Manager -  As the title says it helps you manage your AdSense on your blog. Comes in handy if you us AdSense.

These are a just a few of the hundreds of plug-ins that are available to incorporate into your WordPress blog. Feel free to explore and have fun with them and make the best blog you can.

How do you start building a WordPress site for an already existing website?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I have a website that has been up and running for some time now, and for numerous reasons I want to replace it with a Wordpress site.

So, how do I start building the Wordpress site – in a seperate folder from the "public_html" folder? Then when you are ready to move it into the public_html folder, do you have to correct whatever file-paths and link errors?

Hello I am a professional Wordpress website designer and developer – AITpro.com so you can verify that I know what I’m talking about. ;) The website development method you are planning to do is a standard website development method that I use and probably most professional developers use so you are right on the money there. ;) I’m assuming you already know the basics, but I’ll add this info for someone else who may not know that info.
Best basic website development practices and planning
1). Create the folder first that you want to install Wordpress to either with FTP or with your CP File Manager
2). Very Important! Add an entry in your Robots.txt file to block indexing of the new folder you just created – you don’t want your new folder indexed until you are ready to launch your new website. And in your case you don’t want the folder indexed at all since you will be migrating your wordpress site to the root of your domain. If you don’t have a robots.txt file then create one. Trust me if you don’t do this it will cost you a lot of headaches. ;)
3). Do the Wordpress installation at this point – Pretty much all hosts offer the Wordpress Application for free with anywhere from 10 to 25 free SQL DB’s.
4). After you have completed all your Wordpress design work, customization, plugin installations and configurations then you are just about ready to do the Wordpress migration – SEE the Source link I have provided below for complete WP migration instructions – WP migration is very easy and simple, but be careful to follow the instructions EXACTLY.
5). DEACTIVATE ALL OF YOUR PLUGINS BEFORE DOING THE ACTUAL MIGRATION!!!
6). Since you have installed WP in another directory / folder you have a backup of all your work. ;)
7). Make a backup of your existing website files in the root of your domain.
8). Copy (NOT MOVE) all your Wordpress files and folders to the your domain root
9). Reactivate all your plugins and start testing them and reconfiguring them if necessary. (you can reactivate all of them at once or do them one by one – doesn’t matter).

To answer your question about post migration corrections to file paths. Yes, you will have to modify several paths. Since I’m very familiar with this whole process and especially the WP plugin configurations, I don’t install certain plugins until after the Wordpress migration is done. And I don’t do certain Wordpress configurations until I’ve after I’ve done the migration. If you are not very familiar with WP plugin configurations then i recommend you install and configure everything in your "development" folder and then make the file path changes after you have done the migration. Anytime you are doing a migration you should do it during "off business hours" meaning in the middle of the night. ;) If you have a totally new website it doesn’t really matter when you do the migration, but if you have an existing website that is getting visitors and making money you obviously don’t want to interrupt the flow of $$$. ;)

So to give you some specifics on the Wordpress files that will need to be modified / corrected after the migration:
If you configure Wordpress with Pretty Permalinks you will need to update this first thing right after the migration is done. Personally I recommend that you don’t configure Pretty Permalinks until your Wordpress site is migrated. Pretty Permalinks generates your .htaccess file so by updating PP from the WP Dashboard Admin panel at any point you are updating your .htaccess file.

Common WP plugins that will need path corrections:
WP-DBManager – change DB Options > path to backup. Will need to logout and maybe clear cache too to see the new changes.
Theme My Login – Theme my login Redirection URL and Theme my login Links need to be corrected
Cforms – check abspath.php and /cforms/js/cforms.js for correct file paths

Common WP files that will need to be corrected
Theme templates and specifically your header.php file.
The rest of the information you will need is contained in the Wordpress migration instructions below and all over the Internet. Wordpress answers are everywhere. ;)

How to Create, Promote and Earn Money From your Own Blog

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

For starters, what is a blog? In general terms, it is a sort of interactive, regularly updated online journal. A blog owner is called a blogger, the activity of keeping a blog is called blogging, and the blogging community and everything related to blogging is collectively known as the blogosphere.

How are blogs created? There are several options. The cost-free way is to start a blog at one of the countless free blog services, such as the Google service called blogger. Another option is to use one of the free blog scripts and install it at a paid or free hosting service. Such free blog scripts are also numerous, the most popular of them being wordpress. It is also possible to sign up for a paid hosting service with an already installed wordpress blog, but this service is somewhat costlier.

Now let’s assume that we already have a blog. The next question is: Where do we get content? Choose the subject for your blog. It may be your professional occupation or hobby. In any case, you must have solid knowledge of the subject. For instance, if you are a proctologist, you may write about hemorrhoids, their treatment, prevention and suchlike as long as these are not scientific articles, but materials written in layman’s language. To give you a more practical example, if your hobby is dogs, write about them and people will enjoy it. There is another way to get content. The web has many services offering free articles. All you have to do is select the most interesting ones and publish them. In this way you can quickly fill your blog with content.

Moving on to the question of promoting your blog, it is worth noting that blogs are better indexed by search engines than ordinary web sites due to the specifics of the algorithm used in blogs. For instance, a new article in a well-promoted blog may appear on the search engine results page already on the following day. Of course, this requires registration in special catalogs devoted to blogs, which is what you will do next. Another way is to publish articles with a link to your blog. There are also services meant for just this purpose.

But most importantly, a search engine needs external links to your blog from other web sites. These should be good links generating heavy traffic. What does it mean? It means that ideally the link should be on the web site’s main page. What’s more, this page should have a PR rating of at least 4 (PR or Google Page Rank reflects the significance of any particular web page). Five or six such links will do more than hundreds of other ordinary links. How can you get such links? There are also various options. For instance, you can find a resource thematically related to your blog and offer its owners to reciprocate links. Finally, you can buy such links. The higher the web site’s PR rating, the more such links will cost you.

Now let’s move on to the question of how you can earn money from your own blog. The scheme is quite simple: traffic is converted into money. Your income increases proportionately with the traffic volume. One way to earn from a blog is to place ads, which is done most often through google adwords. Another way is to participate in partnership programs associated with the subject of your blog. So if your blog is devoted to dogs, you should advertise flea control products and other dog-related merchandise. A third way is to sell your own merchandise or services. Of course, you can combine several ways of generating income in a single blog. Last but not least, remember that strength is in numbers, which is why it’s a good idea to maintain several resources at the same time.

Which Church Am I?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Which Church Am I?

Written in skillfully crafted free verse, poet Debbie Harris blends elegance, beauty, and sensitivity into Christ centered portraits. Which Church Am I? is a compelling and thought provoking poetry series challenging both seekers and believers to thoughtfully ponder the modern day church. The reader is invited to enter each church as a participant. This poetry series is a must have for those who desire an intimate personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Comments on poetry series or inquiries for poet performances are welcome by going to http://dharris1.wordpress.com “Living in ‘the land of steeples’ it is sometimes difficult to see ourselves as others see us. That is why I am grateful for the gentle yet prophetic nature of Debbie Harris’ poetry. She throws velvet-covered bricks at the golden calves grazing undetected in many church foyers. Take some time to enter into these metered lines and allow God to challenge you to be the church He created us to be.” -Gary Brandenburg, Senior Pastor, Fellowship Dallas

Is there a Wordpress plugin that shows different sidebar widgets on different pages?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

I’m looking for a wordpress plugin that will allow me to assign certain sidebar widgets to certain pages. So for example on the homepage I might want all sidebars to show, but on the "About Me" page I might want only a sidebar with all of my contact information to show.

There’s a theme called atahualpa for WP. In this theme, you could put a text widget in the sidebar and it can change the text for each widget, i.e. different pages. You can also take out the sidebars for each page however you want to.
